The Irish War of Independence or The Angl0-Irish War:

The Irish War of Independence also known as the Anglo-Irish War was a guerrilla war against  British rule in Ireland by the IRA or Irish Republican Army. Beginning in January 1919 and ending with a truce in July 1921, the agreements of each side eventually led to the Anglo-Irish Treaty. This ended British rule in Ireland, establishing the Irish free state. This war resulted in many men from Ireland volunteering to go fight and brought about loads of violence in Ireland, possibly explaining the lack of men for the Mundy Sisters to date. The Spanish Civil War:

The Spanish Civil War went on from July 17, 1936 to April 1, 1939. Both the nationalists and the republicans attracted  participants from Ireland. An Irish man named Eoin O'Duffy gathered 750 who supported General Francisco Franco's Nationalists to join together and fight with the aid of Irish Catholic Clergy against fascism in Ireland. Three-hundred and twenty Irish men additionally joined The International Brigade, which included people from Britain, the United States and France. A quarter of these Irish men were killed in battle. This touches a bit on Mussolini and Abysinnia, mentioned in a song in the play. Around this same time, Mussolini, an Italian fascist leader, wanted to make Italy into an empire,so he attacked Abyssinia, now Ethiopia, for their fertile lands and mineral wealth.
