List of Terms

 

Whin Bush- The Whin Bush is an evergreen shrub that resides in the pea family! It has bright yellow flowers that contain a distinctive coconut scent.

 

"I am going to throw this aul cracked thing out" - Aul is another word for old.

 

Eejit- stupid or mentally unaware.

 

Ardstraw- a small town in Donegal.

 

Armagh- a city in Ulster.

 

Scut- a snoop.

 

Cub- an affectionate name for a young boy.

 

Wee brat- a small, rude child. Has a term of affection in it.

 

Barley Sugar Sweet- a bar of sugary sweetness sold in country shops which people would suck on for energy .

 

"They put the heart across me"- meaning they've had a big scare.

 

Cheeky Young Brat- same as wee brat. Slighty derogitory. A mother would say this to a naughty child.

 

"I am game"- I am ready for anything

 

Sycamore- a type of tree

 

Gansey-  a jersey with long sleeves

 

Quarry- a small area with many stones

 

Carimay seed bread- a homemade bread made with wheat flour, bread soda, and butter milk, with the added carimay seeds. Made on sundays or special family occasions.

 


"I am sore toff"- I am very proud of myself
