A look Into the world of Old Comedy
George Burns and Gracie Allen were an American comedy duo that worked together as a team in vaudeville, films, radio and television, and attained huge success over four decades. Burns and Allen began their debut when they first met in 1922 and performed together at the Hill Street Theatre in Newark, New Jersey.They continued to perform together, where they moved on to performing in vaudeville theatres, and in 1926, the two married. George Burns wrote most of the material the couple performed and always played the "straight man."Gracie Allen played a silly, air-headed woman, which was attributed to the popular "Dumb Dora" stereotype of the era., a role often attributed to the "Dumb Dora" stereotype common in early 20th-century vaudeville comedy. In film, the pair worked with MGM, Paramount, and Warner Bros, mostly as fill ins for stars who became sick. When it came to radio, they performed Gracie for President, Adventures with Gracie, Maxwell Coffee Time, and The Burns Allen Show. The Burns and Allen Show sooned moved to television in 1950 where is was a huge success on CBS, and ran until 1958.
